The School of Education and Communication

The School of Education and Communication is one of four schools within Jönköping University. We offer education and research in media and communication studies, international work, human resources and teaching. We have extensive activities towards professional training and skills development. Are you interested in joining our research team pursuing school-based research and development where most of our interest is focused on studying education in practice rather than theory, and contribute with your experience and expertise? If so, you may well be the professor in education who we seek!

Our research team for preschool-based educational research is a section of the larger School-based Educational Research Group (PUF). Our work focuses on play, discovery, meaningfulness and learning in pre-school as based on a more holistic perspective. This means that we pay attention to norms and values as we study learning content.

Our pre-school-based research team is for example, focusing on the following:

  • Play and discovery learning
  • Systematic quality work
  • Language and learning
  • The pre-school teacher profession
  • Early intervention and support for children with learning difficulties
  • Co-operation between the different worlds of academic research and professional life
  • International co-operation
  • Studies of the early years, age 1 -3.
  • Social sustainability

Work specifications
You are expected to develop and lead the research team as well as to participate in teaching at basic, advanced and research levels. Active work to secure external research funding involving the entire research team is a priority. Your work will also include administration, occasional managerial tasks, participating in the general development of Jönköping University as well as to further develop our ability to co-operate with society and to strengthen our international profile.

Qualifications
As professor you are expected to develop and apply the scientific knowledge of your field and to demonstrate originality and creativity in your scientific endeavours. You are expected to possess competence contributing to the unique academic ethos of Jönköping University based on co-operation, entrepreneurship, innovation and internationalisation.

To be formally qualified to apply for a professorship you must have gained a bona fide doctoral degree in education or in a relevant academic field. We are assuming that you are familiar with the structure and function of the Swedish school system and its pre-school.

You will need to present documentation demonstrating your experience of academic leadership as well as an ability to plan, organise and manage a team, its members and their pursued research. You must also present documentation that you have successfully supervised at least two doctoral students and that you have obtained specific training in research supervision or, alternatively, have gained equivalent experience and knowledge. We expect you to be a skilled teacher as documented by demonstrating examples of course development and quality assessments of which you have been in charge.

Together with your application you will also need to add evidence of having successfully attracted external and competitive research funding an being able to demonstrate a willingness, and a flair for, co-operating with others both on and off campus.

Since Jönköping University and its School of Education and communication attract colleagues and students from all corners of the World it is essential that you are proficient in communicating effectively in English. It is a merit if you also have some knowledge of Swedish language.

Employment conditions
The professorship is a permanent full-time position. All academic positions, however, have an initial six-month probationary period before a position becomes legally permanent as per contract.

Working conditions for all employees are decided jointly between Unions and University management.

You begin your work at Jönköping University as agreed upon.
