The School of Education and Communication is one of four schools within Jönköping University. We offer education and research in media and communication studies, international work, human resources and teaching. The Department of Subject Didactics and Global Studies at the School of Education and Communication (Högskolan för lärande och kommunikation or HLK) is inviting applications for an Assistant Professor in Global Studies. The ideal candidate is a social scientist who wants to work in a stimulating environment with collegial colleagues and good opportunities for development, where collaboration and student satisfaction are the focus. Central to the social science field of Global Studies at HLK are educational issues focusing on social, cultural, historical, economic and political aspects of social development that concern the relationship between human activities and the surrounding environment, sustainability and justice, both globally and locally.

The position includes teaching primarily focused on the subject area of Global Studies but may also include teaching in other programmes at the university. RESPONSIBILITIES
As Assistant Professor, you will have duties and responsibilities including the following: §  Teaching and examination in Global Studies in the Teacher Education and International Work Programmes and in individual undergraduate (first-cycle) courses. Supervision of theses and thesis work at the undergraduate and graduate level. The role includes administrative work as well as potential participation in the university's external contract work.

QUALIFICATIONS
To succeed in the position of Assistant Professor in Global Studies, you must have the following qualifications:

  • Awarded a doctoral degree in human geography, human ecology, sociology, political science, social anthropology or a corresponding field
  • Have documented teaching expertise
  • Have taken a course in teaching and learning in higher education or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge and commit to taking a course in teaching and learning in higher education during your first two years of employment
  • Have the potential to develop and lead education and research activities
  • Have demonstrated a sound capacity for third-stream activities
  • Have demonstrated a sound ability to plan, organise and prioritise work in an effective way adapted to the purpose
  • Have demonstrated sound leadership skills

It is a merit if you have knowledge about global and local development issues, development theories and/or perspectives on poverty in the current political and economic debates. It is also a merit if you have experience working abroad.

Fluency in written and spoken English is a prerequisite and it is meritorious if you have basic understanding of Swedish, or a willingness to learn Swedish.

In assessing your application your scientific production and your teaching skills and experience will carry equal weight. Great emphasis will also be placed on personal suitability.

EMPLOYMENT
The appointment is a full-time, permanent position. The position usually starts with a trial appointment. Employment to start 2019-03-01 or by agreement.

Working conditions: Annual working hours for teachers according to the university's collective agreement.
