The School of Education and Communication

Information about the CuEEd-LL graduate school

The graduate school’s overall aim is to strengthen Swedish teacher education by developing culturally empowering teaching that focuses on language and literature. Teachers at all stages and in all subjects need good skills in language and literature to develop communicative practices that include heterogeneous groups – in other words, all school pupils.

The doctoral student projects at CuEEd-LL explore how both language and literature can support cultural understanding, literacy and values in today’s digitalised Swedish schools. Different stages of school and subject areas can be the focus of doctoral student projects, which must refer to how language and literature are used in meaning-making, communication and identity positioning. The graduate school is to support comparable, high-quality education and participation in a globalised and digitalised world.

We encourage those with an interest in language and literature from various subject areas that are relevant to teacher education to apply. Your project should contribute with a literary orientation that takes language and media aspects into account.

The following are examples of areas that could be explored in connection with CuEEd-LL’s themes:

  • The use of language and literature in teaching and in teacher education
  • The role of culture in relation to language and literature in different teacher education programmes
  • Opportunities and challenges in the use of language and literature in teaching and in teacher education
  • Multilingualism, literacy and literature in cross-cultural contexts – historical and contemporary perspectives
  • Reading and writing conditions for children at various ages and adults
  • The impact of digital processes on communication, culture and diversity in various fields of education.

At CuEEd-LL, doctoral students are part of a dynamic, multilingual and international research environment with established researchers from five continents. The study programme includes a number of residential schools with international guests and a study trip to South Africa.
