The School of Engineering, Materials and Manufacturing

The School of Engineering is one of four schools within Jönköping University. We offer attractive technical education at undergraduate and graduate levels and conduct advanced research in several technological areas. The School of Engineering is able to award doctorates in the area of industrial product realization. We collaborate with the surrounding society to develop new technology and spread knowledge to strengthen the competitiveness of companies. We have been awarded the accreditation "Engaged University" by the international organization ACEEU (Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities) and in three categories received the highest rating "Excellent". Working with us, you are close to colleagues in an international environment with great opportunities to influence and develop.

The department of materials and manufacturing is a vibrant multidisciplinary research environment that advances the state-of-the-art knowledge and fosters the development of highly skilled researchers and professionals. Our research focuses on material properties and manufacturing processes for cast components. The department cooperates with various national and international research institutes as well as industrial partners and is engaged in basic and applied research projects. Coproduction with industrial partners is a strong characteristic of our project portfolio, both with large companies and SMEs.

The work is based on the understanding and control of materials microstructures and mechanical and physical properties.

The research is mostly conducted in collaboration with industry and is normally based on experimental work in the laboratory/industry as well as modelling and simulation. The research method is a holist approach to the full value-chain of component manufacturing: a synergetic approach includes alloy design, manufacturing process, post treatments, microstructural study, properties characterization, finishing treatments, and modelling of local performances with the final aim to implement the results into design tools.

Our offer to you

The professor should lead and develop the applied research activities in alloy development in collaboration with other research groups at the department and the school. This includes networking and realizing research funding in cooperation with industrial and academic partners in Sweden and internationally. Growing the area to a critical mass of academic staff is an essential of the responsibility. The professor will take part in the administrative and managerial duties at the School of Engineering including being member of the management group at the Department of materials and manufacturing.

Applied research and teaching is closely connected at School of Engineering and the professor is expected to lead and develop industrially relevant teaching on undergraduate and graduate level, as well as in life-long-learning for professionals. Innovative formats of teaching are prioritized.

The research includes the whole value-chain of alloy design and development, including modelling and simulation and experimental validation and evaluation of properties.

The research is conducted in an iterative way, in which the experimental results is continuously used for validating and further tuning the related models used for alloy design. The research includes but not limited the development of medium-to-high entropy alloys or multi-principal element alloys. Sustainability matters, processability, and to some extent, economical aspects are always considered in our research activities, to keep the research closer to industrial and societal needs.

Your profile

For this position it is expected that you have knowledge, experience and skill in computational thermodynamics (e.g. CALPHAD) and experience in developing high-throughput screening algorithms for accelerated alloy design.

Furthermore, to be eligible for the position you have:

  • documented knowledge (publication) in processing of metallic materials, including Metal casting and Metal forming, as well as postprocessing techniques such as heat treatment.
  • in-depth skill and competence in analytical electron microscopy (FIB/SEM, EBSD, EDS, WDS), and other characterization techniques such as DSC, TGA, Tensile, Fatigue, In-situ tensile testing in SEM, etc.
  • documented competence in successful coordination and organization of educational courses in undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • documented experience and skill in developing and conducting lifelong learning activities for the industry
  • documented skill in attraction of external funding, and project leadership, for both applied research and education in collaboration with the industry and research institutes
  • proven experience in developing and implementing innovative pedagogic methods.

It is considered meritorious if you have:

  • a strong national and international academic network within the area of alloy development
  • experience in working in international/multi-cultural settings
  • experience in managerial and administrative roles in academia, at high (school/university) level
  • documented experience in developing European proposals or projects together with other EU partners
  • following open-door policy, positive, and are collaborative

Jönköping University and the School of Engineering has an international focus, which requires strong English proficiency for both teaching and research tasks.
