The School of Engineering (JTH) is one of four schools within Jönköping University. We offer attractive technical education at undergraduate and graduate levels and conduct advanced research in several technological areas. JTH is able to award doctorates in the area of industrial product realization. The department of Materials and Manufacturing is a vibrant multidisciplinary research environment that advances the state of the art knowledge and fosters the development of highly skilled researchers and professionals. Our research focuses on material properties and manufacturing processes.

All materials technology research should contribute to progress towards a more sustainable society.  The work is based on the understanding and control of materials microstructures and mechanical and physical properties behavior. The purpose of our research is to develop knowledge about the relation between material composition, process parameters and the resulting properties.

 

Job description

As a doctoral student at Jönköping University, the working time is devoted primarily to doctoral studies. This includes studying doctoral courses, participating in scientific conferences, publishing scientific papers, writing a licentiate thesis and finally a doctoral dissertation. Up to 20% of the working time may be allocated for teaching and administrative work.

The PhD position is related to the project Low Carbon Footprint Polypropylene for a Sustainable Development and Circular Economy. The research focus for the doctoral studies will be environmentally friendly technologies for removal of odour from recycled polymer.

The research is conducted in collaboration with industry and includes literature survey, experimental work, data analysis and research communication. The experimental work will be conducted both by project partners and in laboratories at JU. This will include some regional travelling.

To ensure industrial relevance, it is important to maintain a wide perspective on the research, including environment, economy, and social impact.

 

Qualifications

To be eligible for the position, you have a Master’s degree or have achieved at least 240 credits/ECTS, of which a minimum of 60 credits/ECTS must have been achieved at the second cycle level, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

We invite applications from outstanding individuals with knowledge of polymer technology/chemical thermodynamics and you should have practical experience in in material processing and characterization.

We are looking for candidates who are willing to travel for frequent visits to regionally located project partners which also requires good written and communicative ability in (at least) the English language.

It is meritorious if you:

  • have experience working in an international team environment with colleagues from both academy and industry
  • have hands-on experience with polymer processing and analysis
  • be result-oriented, motivated, and willing to face challenges
  • have good skills of communication and oral presentation
  • have driver´s license for car - especially if it is valid in Sweden.

 

Information

We offer a fully financed full-time position which is limited in accordance with the applicable collective agreement for doctoral students. The start date of the employment is August/ September 2023 or as agreed upon.

The employment as a doctoral student normally covers five years, of which four years (80%) consist of full-time doctoral studies. The employment is extended annually based on the individual study plan. The salary is regulated according to a special doctoral student ladder. Annual working time for teachers according to the university's collective agreement.
