The School of Education and Communication is one of four schools within Jönköping University. We offer education and research in media and communication studies, international work, human resources and teaching. We have extensive activities towards professional training and skills development. CHILD is a research environment focusing on children in need of special support and their everyday functioning in home, preschool/school and in meeting with professionals in the health and welfare systems. The group is interdisciplinary and includes approximately 40 researchers. CHILD is a collaboration between two schools, School of Education and Communication and School of Health and Welfare, as for now CHILD runs 30 research projects. CHILD is a member of the Swedish Institute of Disability Research. The project is implemented in collaboration with Mälardalen and Linköping Universities. 

The project
Students' engagement level is a promotive factor for academic achievement and an indicator of mental health. Preschool is seen as an environment that encourages positive development of all children, and especially for children in need of special support. This a follow-up project in grade six, of children who’s everyday functioning and preschool environment have been surveyed. The aim is to enhance knowledge on how the children's behavior problems, level of engagement and environmental factors in preschool are related to the children’s engagement in the classroom in grade 6, and the results of the national tests in grade 3 and 6.  A pilot study is planned for the first year to test the relationship between the two measures of engagement for different age groups.

Working tasks
Your tasks will be to prepare the study, collect and analyze quantitative data and author articles. Within the frames of the project you are required to design and write a doctoral thesis. 

Qualifications                
As an applicant you have a degree at least on a one year advanced master level, as well as a master thesis focused on a relevant topic. You have also completed at least 240 ECTS, whereof at least 60 ECTS on advanced level. Of those 60 ECTS you can have gained the equivalent documented skills internationally or in Sweden. 

Further, you have a good ability to communicate in both Swedish and English. You have basic skills in statistics.

The importance of being able to work and collaborate in a research team is emphasized.

Additional merits
An experience of, and skills in doing empirical research is considered a merit. Furthermore, experience of observing children in preschool/school and/or children in need of special support e.g. by practicing as a teacher or psychologist, social worker etc. is also considered a merit.

Employment
Time limited to 4-5 years, 80-100 %. Non regulated working hours according to the applicable collective agreement. Start date March 1, 2018 or as agreed.
