The School of Engineering is one of four schools within Jönköping University. We offer attractive technical education at undergraduate and graduate levels and conduct advanced research in several technological areas. The School of Engineering is able to award doctorates in the area of industrial product realization. At the department of Computer Science and Informatics research is conducted in the field of computer science and informatics. The newly established Jönköping AI Lab (JAIL) consists of two full professors, three associate professors, assistant professors and affiliated PhD students and laboratory engineers. The main research area is applied artificial intelligence (AI) in collaboration with the surrounding society and industry. The focus is on theory and method from data mining, machine learning and semantic technologies. JAIL is currently the largest research group in the department and is developing and growing stronger.
The department offers education at undergraduate, graduate and research levels. The teaching is conducted through bachelor, master and engineering programmes that span from graphic design to software development and artificial intelligence. The research conducted in the department supports the educational programmes. There are approximately 30 staff at the department and about half of the staff have an earned Ph.D.

Position description

We announce a new PhD student position in computer science with focus on interactive and interpretable machine learning systems. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies are increasingly used by people, societal functions, and corporations. One weakness of many of today’s systems is that the models which are generated by the machine learning algorithms are opaque or too complex to understand for users. The purpose of guided and interactive machine learning is to make it possible for the user to take an active part in the machine learning process. Tools and techniques from visualization and human-computer interaction can be used to enhance user experience and to increase our understanding and trust of AI-based systems. As PhD student, you will take part in the research project Mining Actionable Patterns from complex Physical Environments using interpretable machine learning (MAPPE), jointly funded by the Knowledge Foundation, Jönköping University, and two industrial partners. The purpose of the project is to explore and develop methods for interpretable models and automatically generated explanations of predictions for two interesting use cases that concern sensor-based perception of human behavior and performance in complex, physical environments.

Within the scope of the project, the selected candidate will be able to frame the research topic and approach to suit the candidate’s background profile and personal interests.

Work description

As PhD student, you will focus primarily on completing your research education in computer science. Typical work assignments include participation in the MAPPE research project, basic teaching tasks in the form of lab work, exercises, and supervision of undergraduate theses. More generally, you will support the advancement of the research environment and the development of new programs and courses in AI and machine learning at the department.

Qualifications

Candidates must have completed a master’s degree in computer science or a related area. Strong command of English is a requirement. Basic proficiency in Swedish at the time of employment is desired.

Candidates need to demonstrate excellent skills in technical writing, programming, and problem solving as well as significant knowledge and skills within at least one of the following areas: machine learning, data mining, AI, and at least one of the following areas: visualization, VR, human-computer interaction.

We are looking for candidates who are independent, analytical, creative, and committed. Generally, excellent candidates should demonstrate strong organizational, literacy, and numeracy skills as well as passion and diligence for the work at hand.

Employment
The employment is limited to 4-5 years, 80-100 % in accordance with applicable collective agreement. Salary is also regulated in collective agreement.
