The School of Engineering is one of four schools within Jönköping University. We offer an attractive technical education at undergraduate and graduate levels and conduct advanced research in several technological areas. The School of Engineering has the right to award doctorates in industrial product realization. We collaborate with the surrounding society to develop new technology and spread knowledge to strengthen the competitiveness of companies. Working with us, you are close to colleagues in an international environment with great opportunities to influence and develop.
The Department of Construction Engineering and Lighting Science offers graduate and post-graduate education. The department has an active research environment with research focusing on knowledge intensive product realisation and digitalisation (Building Information Modelling, BIM) with a strong emphasis on the interaction between humans and (lighting/building) products. In our efforts to become a national hub for lighting research, we are currently looking for a PhD candidate for the first phase of the Present-sensing User-responsive Lighting for Supporting Emotions (PULSE) project (Licentiate, 2.5 years).
Join our journey as a Doctoral Student in Lighting Science: Shaping a brighter future through sensing emotions!
Job description
In the preceding projects SMILE, DOSE and ExTRA DOSE (see website- ju.se/en/research/research-groups/construction-engineering-and-lighting-science/research-projects/smart-lighting-in-the-built-environment.html), smart lighting and presence-sensing were used to generate light environment control proposals. The PULSE project expands into personalising the lighting environments by developing and integrating tools to be used for evaluating user-responsive feedback. The use of these tools enables assessment of the light environment regarding energy performance and the effect on human health and well-being (vision/beyond vision).
As a doctoral student, the focus of the work will be performing a research project combined with a research education in a third-cycle education program. The third-cycle subject area for admission will be within the Graduate School in Industrial Product Realisation at the School of Engineering, Jönköping University. Although research and research education will be the main tasks (80 percent of full-time work), a doctoral student will, to a limited extent, get opportunities to participate in teaching first- and second-cycle education courses. The remaining time (20%) is allocated for teaching and administrative tasks.
The research project includes performing a literature review, developing algorithms for the sensor’s interaction with the lighting system, conducting testing in the laboratory (and potentially virtual environments) that simulates various living environments, calibrating/ validating all instruments that track the user’s psychophysiological feedback, and writing scientific papers and project reports.
Qualifications
To be eligible for the position, you have a Master’s degree or have achieved at least 240 credits/ECTS, of which a minimum of 60 credits/ECTS must have been achieved at the second cycle level, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.
We invite applications from outstanding individuals who is eager to execute experimental and computational modelling work to assess a (controlled) light environment and its data information flows regarding energy performance and effects on human health and well-being, and has knowledge in programming (e.g., Python, C++, Matlab).
Furthermore requirements:
Jönköping University and School of Engineering has an international focus, which requires thriving in a multicultural environment and good English proficiency for teaching and research tasks, both in writing and orally.
To succeed and thrive in the role, we see it as necessary that you are systematic in your approach and are stimulated by cooperation as well as taking great responsibility and reaching your goals.
