Interstate conflicts, civil wars, terrorism, radicalization, and hybrid threats shape both politics and people's everyday lives. Understanding and managing these complex phenomena requires nuanced research, innovative methods, and education that integrates theory and practice.

At the School of Education and Communication (HLK), one of four specialized schools at Jönköping University, we are now launching new educational programs with a focus on security. We are therefore looking for two Associate Senior Lecturers who wants to be part of a growing, internationally oriented research and educational environment.

Contribute to shaping a new field of research at our university. As an Associate Senior Lecturer, you will have a unique opportunity to combine 50% research with 50% teaching in a creative and expansive academic environment.

 

Research
You will play a central role in our security studies initiative and help build the research environment from the ground up. This involves:   

  • developing your own research in areas such as armed conflicts, complex security risks, terrorism, hybrid threats, peace processes, or related fields
  • actively initiating and participating in national and international research collaborations 
  • applying for external research funding with the support of a dedicated development program 
  • contributing to shaping HLK's long-term research profile in global studies

We offer a structured research support environment that includes a personal mentor, professional development programs in project management, scientific communication, supervision, research funding, and scientific writing and publishing.

 

Teaching
You will mainly teach global studies in courses such as:

  • Introduction to Security Studies  
  • Peace and Conflict   
  • Terrorism
  • War and Changing World Orders   
  • Peace Building

The teaching assignment includes supervision, examination, course development, and planning. Administrative tasks may occur, and teaching is conducted in both Swedish and English.

The aim is for you to qualify for a future permanent position as a Associate Senior Lecturer. During your employment, you can apply for promotion, which requires documented scientific and pedagogical skills.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Those who have demonstrated the following shall be qualified for recruitment as an Associate Senior Lecturer:  

  • have been awarded a PhD, no more than seven years before the application period has expired, in fields such as sociology, political science, security studies, peace and conflict studies, or international relations. However, those who have been awarded a PhD earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons  
  • broad and up-to-date knowledge of the subject of appointment
  • have interest in pedagogics and the potential to become a skilful teacher
  • have documented experience of teaching through, for example, course evaluations
  • have conducted research that has been published/presented in accordance with the publication traditions of the research field and have the potential to become an independent researcher
  • have demonstrated the capacity to create a national and international network within their subject 

Additional requirements include proficiency in spoken and written Swedish and English.

Documented independent research activity, including both externally funded research projects and high-quality scientific publications, is particularly meritorious.
In addition, the following are considered advantageous:

  • experience of research or teaching in the fields of interstate warfare, hybrid threats, terrorism, radicalization, or peacebuilding
  • pedagogical skills
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding community

 

INFORMATION

The position is a fixed-term, full-time position, but for a maximum period of at least four and at most six years, as determined by the employer prior to employment. Start date: August 15, 2026, or as agreed. The position is regulated in accordance with agreements on fixed-term employment of Associate Senior Lecturer (swedish).
