Your role as president is to lead the organisation into the future. You will lead with vision, demonstrate clear leadership, and work closely with all staff, students, and other interested parties. Jönköping University has ambitions to grow, building on our market-attractive courses and study programmes, impactful research, and strong collaboration with industry and other local, national, and international stakeholders.

Jönköping University has an annual turnover of just over SEK 1 billion. This includes government funding, external research funding, and other, minor revenues. More information is available here. The University has about 11,000 students, including 2,000 international students, and slightly more than 800 employees and collaborates with about 350 international partner universities and some 800 companies. JU offers about 60 undergraduate and master’s programmes/specialisations and prepares students for work in international contexts in Sweden and abroad. At JU, there are four schools that provide courses and study programmes and conduct research: the School of Health and Welfare, the School of Education and Communication, Jönköping International Business School, and the School of Engineering. In addition, Jönköping University Enterprise offers access courses and programmes in languages, mathematics, and natural sciences.

Some of JU’s research focus areas are entrepreneurship, ownership and renewal, enablers for good health and welfare, the conditions of learning and communication, and collaborative industrial product realisation with a special emphasis on application in manufacturing companies and nearby service providers.


Person specification

Academic background:
You meet the requirements for appointment as president stated in the Higher Education Ordinance (Swedish Code of Statutes 1993:100, Chapter 2, Section 11) and have been an active participant in the international research community. You also have knowledge of the education sector and experience of teaching at the higher education level and third stream activities.

Leadership experience:
You have proven experience of successful strategic leadership and leadership through others in complex, internationally active knowledge institutions, preferably at the senior management level.

Strategic development:
You have knowledge of the limits and possibilities of higher education and research at the national and international level. You also have an outstanding ability to develop and implement strategies that move your organisation in the right direction and give it a competitive edge. In addition, you have experience of leading work on sustainability, gender equality, and diversity.

Collaboration with stakeholders:
You have experience of constructive and result-orientated collaboration between academia, industry, the public sector, and the wider society at the regional, national, and international level, most importantly collaboration with the EU.

Language skills:
You have at least a basic command of written and spoken Swedish. You speak and write fluent English.

Leadership:

  • Your visionary and inspiring leadership helps create an attractive work environment for both students and staff.
  • You have highly developed interpersonal skills and build strong relationships.
  • Having confidence in others’ ability, you lead by delegating responsibility and thereby gain the trust of the organisation.

  • You are a present and visible leader.

Preferably, you:

  • hold a professorship,
  • have a strong international outlook and robust national and international networks,
  • have knowledge and experience of board work and are familiar with foundations as an organisational form, and
  • have experience from/good relations with Swedish ministries and government agencies, for example the research funding bodies and the Ministry of Education and Research.

 

Information about the position

The position of president is a four-year appointment that may be extended. It may be possible to combine the appointment with other forms of employment.
